Gordon Morris Churches & Religious Spaces

Here at Gordon Morris we understand the complexities involved with installing sound enhancement equipment into churches and other religious buildings. We work with church staff and architects to provide the solution that is right for everyone in the congregation.

Site surveys and meetings with architects, along with trial systems and product demonstrations can be arranged

Gordon Morris have been installing induction hearing loops systems and PA systems into religious buildings all over the country for more than 35 years. Using only high-quality loop amplifiers, from UniVox and microphones from Sennheiser, TOA and Audio Technica, all work is guaranteed for 1 year and the UniVox amplifiers have a 5 year, manufacturer’s warranty.

Based in Somerset many of our installations are in the Bath and Wells Diocese.

Below are just a few religious buildings that we have worked in:

  • Keinton Mandeville,
  • St Bartholomews, Crewkerne,
  • St Leonards, Butleigh,
  • Churchill Methodist
  • The Friends Meeting House, Weston Super Mare.
  • St Andrews, Compton Dundon
  • Wells Cathedral

Further afield we have completed work for churches within the Salisbury and Gloucester dioceses.

We have also worked for many years with the following:

  • St Davids Cathedral, Wales
  • The Religious society of Friends, London
  • Salisbury Cathedral

As part of our service we will train the clergy and/or Church wardens on how the system works and the operating of the system. We also offer an annual service option to ensure that the system is kept working at its best.

On occasions additional sound equipment may be required eg. large funerals or church festivals. We can help as we have a range of equipment to hire. Please contact the office to discuss your needs.

Offices

Gordon Morris Offices

With modern day working environments and open plan offices with  large conference/meeting rooms or busy reception areas the noise levels can be high. This can make hearing difficult if you have a hearing impairment.

By law, hard of hearing people have a right to “reasonable adjustments” being made in the workplace so that they are not at a “substantial disadvantage” compared to non-disabled staff or visitors.

The costs of these “reasonable adjustments” are usually met by the employer but there are government grants available (ATW), in proportion to the size of the employer. The larger the employer the higher the percentage of the costs they are expected to cover.

So if a hearing impaired employee:

  • Struggles to follow what is said at meetings
  • Often asks colleagues to repeat what they have said
  • Often misunderstands what is being said
  • Finds it hard to understand speech over the telephone
  • Avoids socialising with colleagues
  • Often gets confused about which direction sound is coming from
  • Seems to withdraw into themselves

Then there is a duty of care on the employer to make “reasonable adjustments” to the working environment so that the hard of hearing are not discriminated against.

There are many solutions available for these problems; installing a hearing loop, using assistive hearing devices with multiple microphones or using a portable soundfield system. Each will have its advantages and disadvantages depending upon the location they are used in.

We can advise the optimum set-up for your requirements – and where possible – loan equipment to you to try.

Please give us a call and find out how we can help you.

Village Hall Hearing Loop

Gordon Morris Village Hall Hearing Loop

Village halls are often at the centre of community life and as so, stand to the serve the community as a whole. Playing host to a vast array of community groups covering all of the general public, from parent and toddler groups, keep fit classes and amateur dramatic productions and wedding receptions.

Hall committees, trustees or local authority owners, will want to be compliant with the latest Equality Act 2010 making their facilities available to everyone. All too often provisions are made for the more visible disability – mobility, and the invisible disability of hearing impairment is forgotten.

When considering a major refurbishment these halls and buildings, which are classed as a service provider will need to consider what reasonable adjustments can be made. These can be as simple as adding an induction hearing loop to your existing PA system or something a little more complex as funds allow.

Here at Gordon Morris we can help and advise you. We can survey, specify and install a complete package, but we don’t just stop there, we offer system training and an annual servicing option.

Council Chamber

Gordon Morris Council Chamber

Council Chambers are not only rooms where committees meet to discuss important issues and subjects; they can also act as a facility for the general public.

Points on the agenda at these meetings may require confidentiality and privacy from non-council/other members, therefore a normal conventional loop system is not sufficient in offering this service. It is important that all attendees can listen and take part within proceedings; therefore equipment that supports the hearing impaired is a key requirement.

For deaf and hard of hearing people this means providing suitable and effective assistive hearing equipment. The range of equipment that can be found on the market today is very diverse and complex. Not only is knowledge of the equipment essential, understanding the structure of the building as well as the purpose is important when deciding the most effective solution.

For that reason, Gordon Morris recommends systems such as the low-overspill induction loop systems that we can supply and or install.

The UniVox SLS systems control the overspill of the loop horizontally and vertically. Therefore not only can it offer confidentiality, it makes it possible to install SLS systems in adjoining meeting rooms without any interference.

Additional or alternative sound equipment.

Induction Loop Systems are not the only solution or requirement that a council chamber may require. The council may require a portable solution or even a congress system. Gordon Morris can offer these solutions too.

Sports Hall Loop & Audio Loop System

Gordon Morris Sports Hall Loop & Audio Loop System

Sports Halls are environments where the constant sound of balls hitting walls, participants shouting, and all the sounds associated with other sports take place.

This combined with poor acoustics, long reverberation times and echo leads to a poor experience for the hearing impaired. Not only this, large areas, such as sports halls, have many issues and factors that need to be considered when choosing what loop system is required.

The most common solution would be a conventional perimeter loop; however we at Gordon Morris know that this is not sufficient for a sports hall.

Standard perimeter loops are not effective enough in large areas, as you would expect a reduction in volume and sound quality (a dip in magnetic field strength) in the centre of the room. Added to this, when a building is constructed using large quantities of steel (often used in sports hall builds), the reduction in loop performance increases even further.

The SLS system cancels out these issues, and works effectively within these larger areas by using at least eight smaller loops.

We at Gordon Morris understand the complexities of sports halls, and when recommending systems, we always take in to account what type of system would be most effective, and where microphones should be placed within the build, whilst considering the factors that can affect their overall performance.

To understand the different solutions & benefits of each system view our product pages and take a look at the work we did at Norton Hill Secondary School and Sports Centre.

“Gordon Morris has successfully provided an effective hearing system that benefits our hard of hearing pupils and customers. The Gordon Morris technical team were fast and efficient in their installation and the service during and since the work has been excellent.”

Counter Loop & Counter Induction Loop Systems

Gordon Morris Counter Loop & Counter Induction Loop Systems

For people who have difficulty with hearing, everyday situations like a trip to the supermarket, a visit to the bank or checking in at a hotel, can be difficult at the best of times.

However an Across the Counter System (counter Loop) can be the difference between hearing nothing and understanding everything.

Providing clear sound and speech to the hearing aid user. The counter loop system offers a powerful solution that can be easily installed in any counter situation.

A choice of microphone ensures adaptability to the site’s conditions. The flexibility of the induction loop pad allows it to be fitted to the counter in a way that produces the maximum possible speech perception.

These systems use the CLS- 1 amplifier and have a discreetly placed microphone and loop pad, which can be used through security glass.

This type of system enables any number of hearing aid users to listen to speech from microphones, radios, TV’s and other inputs.

An Alternative Solution

Here at Gordon Morris we now have an alternative to the normal counter loop. The loop mat.

Rather than placing a loop pad within the counter, a loop mat can be placed on the floor where the customer stands, this mat produces a magnetic field in which the hearing aid can pick and deliver clear speech.

We have also used these within a museum situation for use with audio displays.

Theatre Loop & Cinema Loop Sound

Gordon Morris Theatre Loop & Cinema Loop Sound

At Gordon Morris we understand that Theatres, Auditoriums, Conferencing Halls alike pride themselves on being easily accessible, welcoming and comfortable for all their visitors.

In an ideal world, hard of hearing people would be able to hear sound through their hearing aids, however, in large environments such as an auditorium, sound is easily lost, background noise is exacerbated and the distance from the stage to the seating areas is too far for the hearing aid to pick up speech clearly.

Theatre & Cinema 2There are a variety of solutions that can be applied within a theatre style setting to improve the quality of sound for hearing and the hearing impaired.

Gordon Morris has extensive knowledge and experience of recommending, supplying and installing assistive hearing equipment and Infrared Systems for hearing or visually impaired individuals.

Fixed Theatre Loop & Cinema Loop Sound System

sls300A static or installed hearing loop system allows a hearing aid user (fitted with a telecoil ~ T switch) to hear speech and sound from the main stage throughout the entire auditorium. Our professional sound engineering team combined with quality loop amplifiers from UniVox, enables the end user to hear and enjoy any lecture, show or production, without interference or annoying background noise.

We recommend that UniVox Superloops are installed into theatre auditoriums. These quality amplifiers work well over large areas and are low spill; this avoids sound over spilling into other areas of the venue and restricts interference from other electrical or audiovisual equipment that is being used within close proximity.

Infrared Systems for Theatre & Cinema

Infrared systems are widely used within a theatre auditorium setting being the preferred choice of many installers.

IRreceiver_000Infrared assistive hearing systems, provide an ideal solution for individuals with both a hearing loss and or visual impairment. The Infrared system requires patrons to use a headset or neck loop receiver, which is supplied by the venue (via ticket or reception counter) and are fully rechargeable.

One of the many benefits of an Infrared system within a theatre is that the system can be used as either a single or two channel system, Channel 1 to provide a hearing loop system to deaf and hard of hearing people and Channel 2 for audio descriptions for people with a visual impairment.

Healthcare

Gordon Morris Healthcare

Providing appropriate assistive hearing equipment or induction loop systems can be difficult, in a health care settings.

There is often a need for multiple systems in this environment. Systems can be required at reception, in the waiting room and in consulting areas/rooms.

The issue of confidentiality complicates this. Traditional loop systems “overspill” jeopardising the patient’s privacy.

To avoid this happening it may be wise to look at infra red systems or personal assistive hearing solutions such as the Comfort DigiSystem, Contego or Duett.

It is not only members of the public that may require assistance with their hearing but members of staff .

We can advise on suitable equipment that may be purchased via the Access to Work scheme. This includes the Littmann Electronic Stethoscope 3200.

School, College, University, Hearing Loops & Sound Systems

School, College, University, Hearing Loops & Sound Systems

It has been argued for several years that school buildings are renowned for poor acoustics and the problem is further aggravated by ambient noise from electrical equipment such as interactive white boards, overhead projectors and other AV-equipment.

Teachers and students who have a hearing loss can encounter difficulties in communicating daily. A minimum of 45% of a young person’s school day is spent engaged in listening activities within school buildings such as sports halls, drama or art studios’ and classrooms. There have been many studies that indicate even the brightest students with a hearing impairment, will struggle to follow the simplest lessons.

Teachers often suffer from vocal strain after having to raise their voices to be heard and research has shown that among the benefits of sound enhancement system; absences amongst teachers are reduced and the concentration, attention span and comprehension of the students significantly improve.

At Gordon Morris we understand the complexities of the school environment and when recommending systems, we always take into account what type of system would be most effective; fixed or portable loops, infra-red, sound-field, or radio aid systems and the factors that can affect with their overall performance.

Museum & Tour Guide Hearing Systems

Gordon Morris Museum & Tour Guide Hearing Systems

Museums, heritage sites and art galleries are always popular places to visit. As a public attraction, these establishments try hard to ensure that all visitors receive the same experience and service often utilising Tour Guide Systems.

It is important that premises or venues are fully accessible; this means that areas such as gift shops, reception halls, restaurants, exhibition rooms and importantly, any guided tours have suitable equipment readily available.

In October 2010, the Equality Act came into force, expanding and enforcing the Disability Discrimination Act, this aims to ensure that public places and services are accessible to all and appropriate adaptations and enhancements are made not just to tick a compliance box.

For deaf and hard of hearing people this means providing suitable and effective assistive hearing equipment. The range of equipment that can be found on the market today is diverse and complex. Knowledge of the equipment’s capabilities is essential, as is an understanding of the structure of the building or location which will ensure the most effective equipment is provided.

At Gordon Morris, we offer an entire range of portable and multi-user assistive listening devices for guided tours, as well as quality professional audio solutions ideal for installing within museums, studios & galleries.
