The FM transmitter’s microphone picks up sound form a microphone or directly via an audio input from an external microphone, TV, audio player or any electronic sound source. Consequently, the sound that the listener hears (via their personal receiver) is in it’s optimal state: free from attenuation (natural volume decay over distance), reverberation and distortion, and (if uni-directional, noise-cancelling microphones are used) background noise.

The FM receiver can be connected to either a neck loop for hearing aid users or headphones/earphones.

If a neck loop or inductive ear hooks are plugged into the FM receiver, the hearing aid user can switch their aid to the “T” program, cut out background noise and listen to the audio transmission. Alternatively headphones may be worn.

The advantage of a portable FM assistive listening system is that it is easy to set up and puts the user in control. The receivers are battery powered and can be taken anywhere. The user simply gives the wireless transmitter to any presenter, teacher, work associate or friend who they wish to hear.
